<p>PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a component of various detergents, in high yield, economically in an industrial scale, by reacting a fatty acid lower alkyl ester with an alkanolamine in a plate-type distillation column introducing an inert gas into the column. CONSTITUTION:A raw material mixture composed of a fatty acid lower alkyl ester (e.g. fatty acid methyl ester), an alkanolamine (e.g monomethanolamine) and an alkali catalyst (e.g. sodium methylate) is introduced through the feed pipe 1 into a vertical plate-type distillation column having an inner pressure maintained at 50-150mm.Hg. In the above process, an inert gas (e.g. methanol vapor) is introduced through the pipe 4 into the column at a rate of >=0.1m/ sec as the speed passing through the cross section of the column, and the feeding of the raw material mixture is controlled so as to attain a residence time of 5-60min. The reaction of the mixture proceeds in the course of flowing down the plates 2, 2', etc. heated by column heaters 3-3''. The alcohol produced as a by-product is discharged from the pipe 5, and the objective product is taken out through the pipe 9.</p> |
