The brush head (4) has a hollow perforated applicator outline (30) whose inner cavity communicates with a dye chamber (54,60) which can be compressed by an operating member (14). The applicator outline which is pref. a row of teeth now comes into contact with the hair roots when the applicator brush is brushed up and down so that the correct amount of hair colour is applied to the roots. The hair colour can be applied more evenly if the teeth are covered with an absorbent material such as felt or foam ensuring a capillary action of the dye from the dye chamber.
