Crosslinked polymer beads with high mech. strength and resistance to swelling pressure are manufd. by the free radical dispersion polymn. of styrene (I) and divinylbenzene (II) in the presence of 0.01-10m mol/mol monomers of ethylenically or allylically unsatd. compds. which are miscible with the monomers. Thus, I 491.7, II 85.5, Me acrylate 8.8, methylcyclopentadiene dimer 0.293, bis (4-tert-butylcyclohexyl) peroxydicarbonate 2.64 and tert-Bu peroctoate 0.293 g were mixed 30 min under a stream of N contg. 8 % O, mixed with water 510, Padmac A 20.1, gelatin 1.6, H3BO3 0.88, and NaNO2 0.59 g and enough 50% aq. NaOH to give pH 10-10.5, heated to 55≦̸C over 45min to give an ion exchange with chatillon value 520g.
