1377228 Hydrocyanation catalyst E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 2 Aug 1972 [2 Aug 1971] 36119/72 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Catalyst systems used in the hydrocyanation of ethylenically unsaturated organic compounds comprise at least one zero valent nickel complex selected from Ni(PXYZ) 3 (R<SP>2</SP>CN) and Ni(PXYZ) 2 A wherein X is -OR, Y and Z are each -R or -OR and R is an alkyl or aryl radical each having up to 18 carbon atoms; wherein the 'R' radicals of a given PXYZ ligand may be cojoined, are the same or different, and are so chosen that the ligand has a cone angle with an average value between 130‹ and 170‹; wherein A is an unsaturated organic compound; and wherein R<SP>2</SP> is an alkyl, cyanosubstituted alkyl, alkenyl or aryl radical each having up to 20 carbon atoms, the carboncarbon double bond of the alkenyl radical being isolated from the nitrile group by at least one carbon atom. The nickel complexes can be pre-formed or prepared in situ by reduction of a divalent nickel compound with a metal more electropositive than nickel in a saturate daliphatic dinitrile solvent or by treating an organo nickel compound with the appropriate ligand. Preferred PXYZ ligands are tri-o-tolylphosphite, phenyl di-o-tolylphosphite and tri-2,5- xylylphosphite. Catalyst promoters specified are metal cations, borohydrides and organo boron compounds. |
