A heat exchanger for cooling the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine, in particular for the internal combustion engines of locomotives used in underground mining, having an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other end. Provided therebetween in the interior of the heat exchanger are baffle walls which impose winding paths on the gas flow. Moreover, there is provided in the interior of the heat exchanger a double-walled cooling element through which a liquid coolant flows and on the surface of which heat exchange takes place with the exhaust gases flowing through the heat exchanger.
