A skid fender for life boats consists of at least one impact energy absorbent compressable body (10) fastened along a rigid elongated bumper (16) on the inside so as to be positioned between the life boat hull (11) and the bumper. The bumper is releasably fastened to the hull by parts attached to each end of the bumper to permit flexing relative to the hull in response to changes in the state of compression of the body or bodies. The fastening parts may include a wire strap (24) in its length. One end of the strap is attached to the bumper with the other end for releasable attachment to the life boat.
