The disc brake prevents the transfer of heat from the pads to the hydraulic fluid, using a piston (18) in a caliper-integral cylinder (17) to drive converging friction pads (12A,12B) onto a disc (10). The cylinder and the piston define the chamber (20) for the actuating fluid, the piston comprising a cup (23) containing insulating material (26). Contact between the piston casing (23) and the friction pad (12A) is avoided. The material (26) may be brake lining comprised of fibres and fillers with a binder and may be rigidly fixed in the cup. The insulating material may be moulded in place or may be pre-formed and force-fitted. The cup may be of pressed sheet metal and may have an internally projecting lip, there being a lined cavity between its base and the insulating material.
|
