The waveguide laser for short duration flow operation has a simple gas supply system, with an independent power supply. It is of a carbon dioxide type and has a cut-in valve (15) for connection to a high pressure vessel (14) containing the laser gas. The valve also connects to a vacuum pump (19) operated by the laser gas stream. The vacuum pump is coupled to the laser resonater (10) via a vacuum suction line (17). The laser resonator is linked to the high pressure line (18) over another line (16), incorporating a throttle valve (16a). In the gas stream of the high pressure line are pref. incorporated a propellar turbine (22) and a generator (23) for the h.v. system (21), supplying the laser laser electrodes (11a, 11b).
