PURPOSE:To prepare the objective compound suppressing the formation of nucleus-substituted derivative and the coloration of by-products and reaction liquid, by carrying out the bromination of the side chain of m-phenoxytoluene with a polyhalogenated ethane in liquid phase in the presence of amorphous carbon. CONSTITUTION:In the bromination of the side chain of m-phenoxytoluene with a polyhalogenated ethane of formula (W and Z and Cl or Br; X and Y are Cl, Br or H) as a brominating agent, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an amorphous carbon catalyst at 130-250 deg.C to obtain m-phenoxybenzyl bromide and m-phenoxybenzylidene dibromide. The amorphous carbon is pref. activiated charcoal, and its amount is pref. 0.1-50wt% of the brominating agent. EFFECT:The reaction completes within a short period even at <=200 deg.C. USE:Synthetic intermediate of synthetic pyrethroidal insecticides. |
