<p>PURPOSE:To display a colored pattern on a colorless background, by sealing in a nematic liquid crystal positive in dielectric anisotropy made by adding a dichromatic dye and an optical rotating agent between substrates for vertical orientation processing, and rendering the distance between orientation processing layers of a display pattern part different from that of any part other than this part. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal is oriented in a focal conic in a region 4 corresponding to a display pattern by thinning the vertical orientation control films 6, 7 by etching, and in the other region, it is oriented homeotropically. A preferable ratio of the distances between the orientation processing faces of both the regions is 2<=D1/D2<=5. Voltage is normally applied to the electrodes 4, 5 of all the segments, and a pattern is displayed by erasing the voltage applied to the segment electrode 4 corresponding to the pattern to be displayed. When the segment electrodes 4 are formed larger than the actual displayed pattern, said distance is enlarged in accordance with this actual display pattern.</p> |
