PURPOSE:To retard the peeling-off of an active material and short circuit in the bottom by making larger the welding length of plate lug and a ledge than the width of a plate group. CONSTITUTION:A spacer 4 is placed on the outside of a plate end plate 3 of a plate group 2, and the height of the spacer 4 is made equal to that of a plate. A lug 6 of the plate end plate 3 and the end of a ledge 5 are welded at the position where is located on the outside by a dimension W from the center in the thickness direction of the spacer 4. Thereby, an arrow direction force is constantly applied to the lug 6 and the end plate 3 and the sapcer 4 is prevented from floating up. The dimension W showing the relation between the welding position of the lug 6 and the central position of the thickness of the spacer 4 is preferable to meet the relation of W>=0. A deterioration in the performance of a battery caused by the peeling off of active material by vibration and the short circuit in the bottom can be retarded.
