Vertical cathode pocket assembly for membrane-type electrolytic cell

A pocket shaped cathode for use in an electrolytic cell employing membrane separators between the catholyte and anolyte is described which by reason of its configuration reduces the power requirements of an electrolytic cell. More particularly there is described a cathode which is pocket shaped, has internal gas directing baffles and fluid passageways through one end wall cooperatively associated with the interior of said pocket and the catholyte chamber of an electrolytic cell to circulate fluid to and from said pocket and said chamber and rapidly remove gases generated within and between said pocket baffles. The particular configuration of the present invention gives improvements of up to 7 or more percent in lowered cell voltages, reduces cathode blinding with hydrogen gases, and improves circulation of catholyte to and from the electrolytic process.
