A character carrier 2, Figs. 2 and 4, comprises apertures 54 over each of which is secured an opaque matrix 92 formed with rows of transparent characters (e.g. each row being in a different style) and reference marks 88. Two carriers 2, 3 (e.g. one for lower and one for upper case characters) in the form of endless bands are fed continuously through an exposure zone 80-81, Fig. 1. At any instant, several characters are present in the zone, and a latent image thereof is formed on a stationary film 22. The particular carrier and row can be selected by means of a shutter 166, Figs. 10 and 11, and mirror and prism system, Fig. 10. Characters to be projected are selected by a computer, Fig. 9, reading a coded tape. By means including a photo-cell 30 and the marks 88, the position of the selected character in the zone is ascertained, and when its latent image coincides with the position on the film where it should be projected, a light source 24 is instantaneously energized. At the same time, means is provided whereby only the selected character is projected, which may comprise a shutter band 4, Fig. 1, having an aperture 56 located by a stepping motor 14 acting against a clock spring under control of the computer, a rotating mirror 190, Fig. 12, to direct the light from a source 186 to the desired zone 196, or a flexible light tube 200, Figs. 13 and 14, controlled by the stepping motor 14. The point size is controlled by rotating a member 226, Fig. 15, to bring one only of the lenses (220, 222, 224) into operative position. Normally, characters pass through the zone 80-81 in alphabetical order, several alphabets passing through during each complete revolution of the carrier. When two characters are selected in succession, the second of which occurs later in the alphabet, they can thus be exposed during one alphabetical sweep. Alternatively, the characters can be arranged according to expected frequency of use, the more frequently used ones passing more often through the zone. The carrier may be a drum, field-flattening lenses being used to prevent distortion due to arcuate movement of the characters through the zone.
