The rotating machine has a tachometer coupled by its shaft to the shaft of the machine. The tachometer's (12) stator (23) is mounted rotationally on one of the two shafts (18) and is prevented from rotating relative to the machine's casing (10) and from moving axially relative to the tachometer's shaft. The tachometer's shaft has a split end region containing radial slits (36) and fingers (37). This end fits into an axial hole (16) in the machine's shaft (11) and is retained by a cone and bolt (38,40) that spread the fingers.
