PROCESS FOR PRODUCING PYRIDINES SUBSTITUTED AROMATICALLY OR HETEROAROMATICALLY IN THE 3 POSITION

A process for the production of a pyridine which is aromatically or heteroaromatically substituted in the 3-position is disclosed wherein the process comprises reacting an aliphatic oxo compound which contains an unsaturated carbon bond adjacent to the oxo group with an aliphatic-aromatic or aliphatic-heteroaro-matic aldehyde and with ammonia in the gas phase in the presence of n dehydrating and dehydrogenating catalyst at a temperature in the range of from 250 to 550.degree.C. The pyridines can be produced in high yields from readible available starting substances and are important intermediate products for the production of medicaments, plant protection agents and plastics.
