PURPOSE:To suppress splashing of a liquid crystal material in an element when substrates are broken by injecting the liquid crystal material prepd. by mixing a liquid crystal compd. and curable compd. having curability by light or heat into a liquid crystal cell, then increasing the viscosity of the liquid crystal material up to a specific value by light or heat. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal optical element is constituted by sealing a pair of the substrates with electrodes by a sealing material at the periphery and injecting the liquid crystal material into the liquid crystal cell formed in such a manner and is increased in the viscosity of the liquid crystal material so that the splashing of the liquid crystal material at the time of breakage is prevented. The liquid crystal material formed by mixing 70-95wt.% liquid crystal compd. and 5-30wt.% curable compd. is used. After such liquid crystal material is injected into the liquid crystal cell, the curable compd. is cured by photoirradiation or heating to increase the viscosity of the liquid crystal material to 1,500-100,000cps. The effect of preventing the splashing is low if the viscosity after curing is <1,500cps and the response is slow and the driving voltage increases largely; therefore, such is undesirable if the viscosity exceeds 100,000cps. |
