The mounting for a stone is held by notches in the culet of the stone which is not visible. The mounting is a metallic piece which is the same shape as the stone but has smaller dimensions. Claws on the mounting corresponding to the number and shape of the notches, engage in the notches and are held by the resilience of the metal. Holding pads on the claws fit into the notches. The stone can be precious, semi-precious or synthetic and can be of any shape.
