In a method of operating a heat pump, an air-conditioning installation or the like, it is desired to improve the economy in operation. Moreover, a device for implementing the method is to be produced. This is achieved by in each case supplying a given weight mass of air or gas to a reservoir and at the same time removing from this reservoir the same mass at the same pressure and subsequently expanding the removed mass and taking it out of the reservoir system, in order then finally to replace it with an air or gas mass of the same size, the removed and expanded mass flowing into the atmosphere or a separate reservoir system and the replacement air or gas mass for subsequent pressure equalisation to the reservoir system being removed from the atmosphere or the separate reservoir system. As a device, use can be made of a rotary pump known per se with a preferably eccentrically mounted rotary piston or rotor.
