In the removal of suspended solids from a liq. (wastewater or raw water being purified) by filtration in a fitration vessel contg. a bed of discontinuous polyurethane foam particles, the filter bed is regenerated by adding >= 1 bed vol. of a regeneration liq. to the filter vessel, mech. mixing the regeneration liq. with the filter bed particles, and discharging the solids-enriched liq. from the vessel. In a test with a filter used for the treatment of wastewater, 4.5 gal of regeneration liq. was required and 97.5% solids removal was obtained, compared with 14gal and 72%, resp., for regeneration by backwashing.
