In the case of a desk, which is composed of a frame which is equipped with two lateral parts and of a table top which can be adjusted vertically with respect to the said frame, a self-locking threaded spindle being provided for adjustment of the said table top, the table top or a part thereof can be pivoted with respect to the frame and can be fastened in the selected inclined position. The independence, thereby achieved, of the height of the front edge of the working surface from the vertical adjustment can be improved further by dividing the table top into two parts by depth, the front part advantageously having about twice the depth of the rear part and the two parts being articulatedly connected to one another, and by making only the rear part of the table top vertically adjustable parallel to itself, the front part, on the other hand, resting with its front edge on the frame of the desk and adopting an inclined position which is dependent on the vertical adjustment of the rear part.
