The rectangular frames (2,3) are wider than they are high and are pivoted about central vertical axes to obtain the optimum wind advantage. Several frames are set in line along the ship and their thrust is added to that of the engines to save fuel. The frames are divided into separate vertical sections by reinforcing spars. Cross braces are fitted using cables and the frame attitude is controlled by sheets (20) linked to a stern controller. The top spars of the frames are extended laterally to form hoists from transferring loads to and from the quayside.
|
