<p>The brake shoe is made of a sintered composite, contg. (by wt.) at least 5% Fe, at least 65% free or combined metals, 5-15% alkali(ne earth) metal (boro- or alumino-)silicates, 5-15% graphite and less than 5% impurities and opt. additives, the side walls of which are surrounded by and metallurgically bonded to a high ductility annular envelope, the residual porosity of the assembly being less than 5%. The brake shoe is useful for heavy goods vehicles, aircraft and esp. locomotives and railway waggons. The shoe has a life of 5-6 times that of cast iron shoes. The envelope prevents breaking off of the edges of the shoe and wears uniformly without increasing wear of the wheel rim which it contacts.</p> |
