PURPOSE:To prolong the life of a melting furnace used for the treatment of industrial waste or the like by controlling melt to a half-solidified state in the part in contact with the wall of the melting furnace in treating industrial waste or the like by melting in the melting furnace. CONSTITUTION:If base metal is charged into a melting furnace 1, and a voltage is applied to electrodes 1A, 1B, 1C to produce arcs between the electrodes 1A, 1B, 1C and the base metal, the base metal is melted by heating to form base metal melt 2. Materials to be treated such as industrial waste or the like which are heated to dry if desired are charged onto this melt 2. In this case, the melt is controlled so as to assume a half-solidified state in the part in contact with the wall of the melting furnace to cause self-coating of the furnace wall, whereby the furnace wall is protected from erosion and the life of the melting furnace is prolonged. |
