1,261,669. Joint-making packing. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 26 Aug., 1970 [26 Aug., 1969], No. 41139/70. Heading F2B. A composite gasket comprises a resilient core and a seamless plastics jacket 3 closely-fitting the inner periphery and the opposite end faces of the core, the resilient core or an inner ring 8 thereof being split or subdivided to enable it to be inserted into the jacket during assembly. The jacket may be made of fluorinated ethylenepropylene, P.T.F.E., polypropylene, polyethylene or P.V.C. The resilient core may be formed by two semi-annular rings, or as shown, by an inner split or subdivided ring 8 of asbestos, rubber or plastics and an outer ring formed of a metal ring 4 having annular corrugations and sandwiched between asbestos rings 5, 6; alternatively the outer ring may be made from natural or synthetic rubber or cork and reinforced with metal wool, wire mesh or metal plate. To assemble the gasket shown, the inner ring 8 is first positioned in the jacket and then one of the flanges 3 is distorted and forced through the central opening in the outer ring.
