Automatic guidance system for trackless vehicle - has horizontal and vertical coil outputs processed to generate ratio signal

The guidance system is for a trackless vehicle and uses an electromagnet coil arrangement that produces an interaction with a conductor inset into the road surface. The system is designed to improve the ease with which the ratio of horizontal to vertical offset signals is determined. The vehicle has a detector unit consisting of a horizontal coil and a vertical coil, that reacts to the field generated by a low frequency a.c signal applied to the conductor. The horizontal component (Uw) is passed over a switching stage (S1) to a PID regulator (Z) with the output compared (k) with the fitted value (F). The vertical component (Us) is processed over a switch (S2) controlled by the comparator to generate the ratio signal (Vr=Uw/Us).
