<p>Shielded transportation and storage vessel for irradiated nuclear fuel elements and other radioactive waste is fitted with a shielding lid, a sealing lid, esp. seal-welded to the surrounding vessel, and a protective cover outside these two lids. The protective cover is designed to deform under an extraordinary external loading. Between this cover and the sealing lid there is a gap, of sufficient size to allow this deformation of the cover to take place fully without the cover coming into contact with the sealing lid. With this arrangement, the strength of the resilient outer cover is fully utilized and there is no risk of an impact causing a failure of the weld seam around the sealing lid.</p> |
