PURPOSE:To segment character patterns accurately all the time by giving the degree of freedom to the carriage direction of a document by controlling the segmentation direction of characters corresponding to a column and a line of characters in a sheet buffer wherein document images are quantized and held. CONSTITUTION:Document images for one sheet are quantized and held temporarily in a sheet buffer 1, the X-directional and Y-directional addresses of the buffer 1 are counted by X-address and Y-address counters 2 and 3 respectively, and projections formed in the directions X and Y are held in X-projection and Y-projection registers 4 and 5. Under the control of a control part 9, the segmentation positions of the character lines and character patterns are determined by the projections formed in the registers 4 and 5. When the buffer 1 is scanned mainly by the counter on the basis of this determination, the counter 3 performs a subordinate scan in the buffer 1 and when the counter 3 performs a main scan in the buffer 1 and when the counter 3 performs a main scan in the buffer 1, the counter 1 takes the subordinate scan in the buffer 1 to give the degree of freedom to the carriage direction of a document, segmenting character patterns in the correct direction all the time. |
