<p>1493478 Laminates J A L F CHOLLET 8 Oct 1975 [9 Oct 1974] 41277/75 Heading B5N [Also in Division C4] Laminates are prepared using a silicatecontaining flame-resistant adhesive composition comprising (1) an inorganic component consisting, with respect to the total weight of the composition, of (a) 20-90 wt. per cent of a concentrated aqueous alkali metal silicate solution; (b) 5-25 wt. per cent of a clay and (c) 2-7 wt. per cent of deflocculated asbestos fibres; and (2) an organic component consisting of an aqueous solution of a carboxylmethylcellulose, a starch ester, a dextrin or mixtures thereof, the organic component, calculated as dry weight, being present in an amount of 0À2 wt. per cent to 2 wt. per cent of the total composition. The composition may be prepared by (a) charging the silicate solution in a container and rotating it in a given direction; (b) intimately dispersing a 30-70 wt. per cent aqueous solution of the organic component in the stirred silicate while rotating the organic solution in a direction opposite to that in which the silicate was rotated; (c) adding the clay on completion of the dispersion, with continued stirring and (d) then dispersing the deflocculated asbestos in the stirred mixture. In the examples, the compositions comprise sodium silicate, kaolin, deflocculated asbestos fibres, aqueous solution of starch ester, methyl siliconate, potassium silicate, a powdered lava such as oriolite dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine, carboxy-methylcellulose and dextrin. Salts or oxides of, e.g. Al, Mn, Cr, Pb, Ti, Ca and Fe may be added and an alkali metal (e.g. sodium) fluorosilicate may also be incorporated. The compositions are used to bond black sheet iron to concrete, agglomerated wood-fibre boards to concrete and plywood.</p> |
