Prepn. of 11-beta:hydroxy;steroid derivs. - by fermenting an 11-desoxy steroid with Curvularia spp.

The prepn. of 11beta-hydroxy steroids of formula (I) comprises fermenting a 11-desoxy steroid of formula (II) with a fungal culture of the species Curvularia, pref. Curvularia lunata (where the dashed lines represent single or double bonds; X is F, Cl or Me; R1 is H or 1-6C alkyl; R2 is 1-6C aalkyl). (I) are antiinflammatories. The process is much simpler than previous processes which involved many steps and great expenditure and gives high yields (85-90%).
