PURPOSE:To evaluate the compression strength of a refractory brick automatically and nondestructively by measuring the velocity of sound in the refractory brick with an ultrasonic probe. CONSTITUTION:The velocity of sound V is approximately proportional with the root of Young's modulus E. It is known that relationship between the compression strength sigma(kg/mm.<2>) and the Young's modulus E can be shown by a curve shown in the attached graph. Such a relationship which has previously been determined is stored or set in, for example, the memory of a computer system. An ultrasonic probe is automatically and closely applied to refractories which are being transferred automatically and an ultrasonic wave of 50kHz-400kHz is emitted to measure the velocity of sound in the refractories. The measured results are compared with the stored data to find the respective corresponding compression strengths of the refractories thus evaluating the compression strength of the refractory. |
