IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO A ROLL A roller for the pressure treatment of a web of material, having a central rigid beam and a surrounding rotatable roller shell forced towards the nip by hydraulic actuator elements acting in the roll. The apparatus employs hydraulic elements having a short movement, thus occupying small recesses and not detracting from the strength of the beam. The device includes cooling elements or heating elements or to provide a temperature gradient across the beam to maintain the beam in a straight condition when pressure is applied or the beam initially has a shape such that when the beam is deflected the operative side of the beam is substantially evenly spaced from the operative part of the roll. In this embodiment the axis of the beam may be moved downwardly when pressure is applied to the beam.
