Process for the preparation of substituted aralalkylamines

Compounds of the formula I are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula II or its acetal with an appropriately substituted phenylethylamine in the presence of catalytically excited hydrogen. The symbols in the formulae have the meanings stated in Claim 1. When R4 in formula I is hydrogen, a compound with R4 = lower alkyl can be obtained by alkylation. The compounds of the formula I and their acid addition salts have mild blood pressure-lowering and selective heart rate-lowering actions. <IMAGE>
