Prodn. of catalyst for hydrocracking a heavy hydrocarbon feedstock to obtain high quality middle distillate prods. (b. pt. 300-700 deg. F) comprises: (i) providing an alumina carrier; and (ii) contacting the carrier with (1) component(s) from the metals (X) of Periodic Gp. VIB so as to obtain a surface (S) concn. measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) such that YS/(Al+X)S = 4-15 and a bulk concn. of 2.0-15.0 wt.% X, (2) component(s) from the metals (Y) of Periodic Gp. VIII so as to obtain a surface concn. by XPS such that YS/(Al+Y)S = 2-5 and a bulk concn. of 1.0-4 wt.% (Y), (3) H3PO4 soln. contg. sol. organosiloxanes at pH 1.5-3.5 so as to obtain a surface concn. by XPS such that PS/(Al+P)S = 0.1-8 and a bulk concn. of 0.4-2 wt.% P, and (4) silica so as to obtain a surface concn. by XPS such that (SiO2)S/(Al+SiO2)S = 1-10, and a bulk concn. of 0.1-5 wt.% SiO2, whereby the catalyst surface is characterised by a silica-alumina material having textural and crystall-ographic properties substantially similar to those of the alumina carrier.
