An undergarment, e.g. a man's briefs or pants, has a waistband comprising a flat elastic strip wide enough to cover a double seam constituting a sheath into which an elastic thread may be introduced as an alternative support. The alternative may be brought into use when the first band loses its elasticity. The upper free edge of the first flat band does not wave or crumple by reason of the intervening sheath created by the double seam, and the wearer's comfort is increased by the greater protection afforded.
