An advancing mechanism operates the cutting slide of a cutting machine to produce bar workpieces of a required length from rod delivered by an extrusion press. The advancing material contacts a stop and causes pressure oil admission into the hydraulic cylinder by which the advancing movement of the cutting slide is effected. Subsequently the cutting mechanism is operated at a moment when the advancing rod material reached the required length. The stop is fitted on a carriage and its position is mechanically controllable. The carriage travels on an extension of the slide and is supported from below by a roller mounted on the machine frame. The part of the slide comprising the hydraulic cylinder is supported by rollers travelling on the base part of the machine frame.
