The hollow tower is capped by a collector head with inlet vents which open under pressure of the wind. The flow of air downward through the centre section drives rotors on concentric transmission shafts machines to rotate in an evacuated enclosure in the base of the tower. Only the outlet vents on the leeward side of the base open under residual pressure from within. Facilities are provided for starting the rotors at times of light wind, and for regulating the air flow.. High-power installations can be achieved with simplified construction and greater reliability, but without risk of damage from gusts.
|
