The invention relates to a locking device having a plurality of preferably change-over tumblers actuatable by means of a key, the bit of which has a plurality of bit steps stepped relative to one another by one or a multiple of one step jump. To prevent the production of a false key by the optical detection of the key-bit steps, the bit steps (22 to 29) of each bit (2) are stepped by at least two different step jumps. The bit steps (22 to 29) of each bit (2) can either be stepped by different steps (a, b) or be formed by one or a multiple of one step (c) which is identical, but starts from an offset zero line. The key is preferably provided with a second bit (5), the bit steps of which are stepped by step jumps different from those of the first bit. <IMAGE>
