Hydrocracking of carbonaceous feeds (e.g. petroleum residua, tar, coal, coal liqs., tar-sand oil or shale oil) is carried out by contacting the feed with H2 at elevated temp. and pressure in the presence of a molten metal halide (I) forming a continuous liq. phase, where (I) is SbCl3, SbBr3, SbI3, AsBr3, AsI3, BiCl3, BiBr3, GaBr3, HgBr2, HgI2, SnBr2 and/or TiI3. The (I)/feed wt. ratio is pref. more than 3. The process is pref. carried out at 200-550 (esp. 275-400) deg. C and an H2 partial pressure of at least 17.2 (esp. at least 55) bar. The reaction can be promoted by an inorganic acid which is stable under the reaction conditions, esp. a hydrohalic acid, pyrophosphoric acid or H2SO4. The process gives high yields of gasoline-range hydrocarbons.
|
