PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively introduce prestress onto a side wall of a cylindrical structure. SOLUTION: There is provided a method for constructing the cylindrical structure, according to which an outer periphery of a bottom slab 1 is separately constructed as an annular outer ring 1b which has a number of slits 6 formed therein in a circumferential direction thereof, and then the side wall 2 is built on the outer ring in one body, followed by introducing prestress. Then, reinforcements to be embedded in the outer ring are divided into pieces at the slits, and the divided reinforcements are connected together in the slits after introduction of the prestress. Further, prior to construction of the outer ring, pile heads of respective piles bearing the outer ring are energized in a radially outward direction, and the outer ring and the side wall are constructed together with the pile heads under the energized condition, followed by canceling the energization of the pile heads, to thereby apply a circumferential compressive force to the outer ring and the side wall by using an elastic restoring force of the energization. Thereafter, prestress is introduced onto the side wall.
