NEW MATERIAL:A benzyl alcohol derivative shown by the formula I [R is 1-20C aliphatic acyl, (lower alkyl substituted) benzoyl]. EXAMPLE:alpha-(3,4-Dimethoxyphenethylaminomethyl)-4-toluoyloxybenzyl alcohol. USE:A cardiotonic having improved durability. PROCESS:An alpha-(3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamino)acetophenone shown by the formula II (R<1> is amino-protecting group) with an amino group protected is reacted with a fatty acid shown by the formula R-OH, an aromatic carboxylic acid, or their reactive derivatives, to give alpha-(3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamino)acetophenone shown by the formula III with its amino group protected. This compound is then subjected to catalytic reduction, etc., to give alpha-(3,4-dimethoxyphenethylaminomethyl) benzyl alcohol derivative shown by the formula IV, which is subjected to catalytic reduction.
