WINDING METHOD FOR SOFT ELASTOMERIC RIBBON AND WOUND SPOOL RESULTING THEREFROM

The method of unwinding an elastomeric strip (R) from a narrow reel (10) onto a wider drum (30) uses a guide (21) which is moved to and fro horizontally across the face of the drum. This guide consists of two vertical spindles so that the horizontal strip is twisted into a vertical plane then allowed to continue in the horizontal plane as it is wound onto the drum. The drum is rotated by contact with a roller (25) driving it. The drum spindle is supported between guides so that it can travel away from the driving roller spindle as its diameter increases, to maintain a low and even pressure. The reciprocation of the carriage carrying the vertical spindles is regulated by end stops (24). Winding is controlled to reduce sag and maintain even tension in the strip. The distance between the vertical spindles and the drum is kept at 101.6 mn, and the properties of the strip are specified.
