A four-cycle internal combustion engine employs a main combustion chamber(2) supplied with a lean combustible mixture and an auxiliary combustion chamber(5) supplied with a rice combustible mixture. A torch nozzle restriction(3) connects the chambers. A spark plug(4) is associated with the auxiliary chamber. The direction of the principal axis of the torch flame through the restriction is toward the center of mass of the air-fuel mixture in the main chamber when the piston(1) is 90o past top dead center.
