Drive is provided by the hydraulic equipment of an agricultural tractor, for an appliance for splitting firewood. It is designed for three-point attachment. Return of the carriage (2) and/or sliding gear, and its arm (3) bearing the splitting wedge (4), to the initial position, is effected by a return cylinder built into the mounting. This can be a separate pressure cylinder or draw cylinder, or a double-action hydraulic cylinder. A variety of different arrangements and applications of the machine may be used.
