<p>The impact absorbing seat belt has the side next to the wearer fitted with hollow ribs which are inflated in a collision. The ribs form a soft padding and reduce injury without having a complex belt support mounting. The structure of the ribs is such as to provide maximum support and the inflation control uses compressed air bottles or a pyrolytic generator. The ribs are inflated by the collision sensor control. For a pyrolytic inflation, a series of charges are fired in a staggered pattern to provide a steady inflation rate over a fixed period. The ends of the rib sections are reinforced by wrap round bands sewn to the belt.</p> |
