摘要 Heavy hydrocarbon oil (such as tar sand bitumen, shale oil, crude oil, residium or coal derived liquids) is hydrocracked (optionally with a catalyst) using hydrogen in the form of synthesis gas. A slurry 10 of bitumen, preferably together with coal, in the presence of a hydrogen-rich synthesis gas 28 is passed through a confined hydrocracking zone 13, and the effluent emerging from the zone is separated into a gaseous stream 18 containing a wide boiling range of material and a liquid stream 16 containing heavy hydrocarbons. The use of synthesis gas provides increased liquid yields and increased H/C atomic ratios of liquid and solid, as well as significantly decreased hydrogen consumption. <IMAGE>
