The detector for cut faces (3) perpendicular to a workpiece surface (2) uses a probe extending parallel to the latter and coupled to the pointer for a display dial (4) movable perpendicular to the workpiece surface (2). The guide axis (11) for the display dial (4) is carried by a support block (10) to extend at a given distance from the cut face (3), the support block (10) rigidly secured to a support (8) arranged at a distance from the cut face edge (6) and in turn rigidly secured to the surface (2) of the workpiece (1). Pref. the support (8) is made of a magnetic material and the support block (10) attached to it at a distance from the workpiece surface (2) carries a number of stop pins (9) which determine the distance of the guide axis (11) for the display dial (4) from the cut face (3). The detector is light and easy to handle and allows the surface regularity of a cut face to be determined irrelevant of the weight and dimensions of the workpiece.
