PURPOSE:To obtain a water absorbing acrylic fiber having practical properties with a high operating efficiency, by applying a specific amount of a spinning oil to a fiber prepared from a mixture of an acrylonitrile polymer with a specific water absorbing resin. CONSTITUTION:A water absorbing fiber, having a surface resistance <=1X10<9>OMEGA, a water retention >=25% and a reduction in water retention <=10% on dry heat treatment at 120 deg.C for 1hr, and consisting of (A) 90wt% or more acrylonitrile polymer and (B) less than 10wt% water absorbing resin, i.e. a resin having 1-15 crosslinkages, based on 400 repeating units of polymer, a particle size <=0.5mu in a bone dry state and a water swelling degree of 20-300cc/g. The surface of the fiber is coated with 1.5%owf or less spinning oil. The water absorbing resin is obtained by crosslinking a resin consisting of acrylonitrile essentially with divinyl sulfone. |
