Surgical wound edge holder(s) usually comprise metal clamps which are applied with use of force within the overall circumference of the operation site, and this entails some difficulty. There is now proposed, according to the invention, a surgical wound edge holder or wound holder which comprises a flexible closed hoop or loop part which can be inserted in the incision site in its initial, compact shape and is at least partially inflatable so as to expand to a cleft-like configuration which opens the site and exposes its interior. Advantageously, the part possesses an outer profile which is concave in the radial cross-section and is created, for example, by two annular inflatable parts (21) being joined to each other by a radially inner web (22), these parts conveniently being joined to each other by small tubes (23) in order to facilitate inflation. Furthermore, the structure of the part can be such that it necessarily forms an elongate configuration, for example due to a suitable reinforcement, in order to adapt itself to the general shape of the operation site. <IMAGE>
