Protective paint for friction linings comprises 5-80 wt. %, esp. 10-35 wt. % of a cellulosic binder, 10-60 wt. % esp. 15-45 wt. % of an inert neutral pigment chosen from iron oxide, magnesium silicate, magnesium oxide, alumina, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, white lead (ceruse), lithopone, barium sulphate or silica, 0.5-15 wt. %, esp. 3-8 wt. % of an anti-corrosion agent chosen from sodium nitrite, potassium chromate, lead chromate and zinc chromate, and 10-85 wt. % of one or more solvents. The coatings can be applied to brake linings, clutch linings, etc. by spray, brushing, dipping, etc. to give a coating on the material which prevents adhesion to, and corrosion of, the metal against which the lining rubs in use. esp. after long periods of storage exposed to a humid atmosphere. The coatings do not affect the friction properties of the linings after installation but withstand normal handling and storage prior to use. |
