A coating inhibitor for partial dip coating of steel substrates with Zn or Al comprises: (1) a water-soln.phosphate which can be partially replaced by an alkali metal silicate, quaternary NH4 silicate, SiO2 soln. and Al2O3 soln. and (2) an inert heat-resistant inorg. material. The inhibitor is applied specified portions of the steel surface to prevent their coating, the inhibitor-treated article is dried and dip-coated in molten Zn or Al, and the inhibitor is removed.
